    Deep learning for inferring cause of data anomalies

    Daily operation of a large-scale experiment is a resource consuming task, particularly from perspectives of routine data quality monitoring. Typically, data comes from different sub-detectors and the global quality of data depends on the combinatorial performance of each of them. In this paper, the problem of identifying channels in which anomalies occurred is considered. We introduce a generic deep learning model and prove that, under reasonable assumptions, the model learns to identify 'channels' which are affected by an anomaly. Such model could be used for data quality manager cross-check and assistance and identifying good channels in anomalous data samples. The main novelty of the method is that the model does not require ground truth labels for each channel, only global flag is used. This effectively distinguishes the model from classical classification methods. Being applied to CMS data collected in the year 2010, this approach proves its ability to decompose anomaly by separate channels.Comment: Presented at ACAT 2017 conference, Seattle, US

    Effect of heuristics on serendipity in path-based storytelling with linked data

    Path-based storytelling with Linked Data on the Web provides users the ability to discover concepts in an entertaining and educational way. Given a query context, many state-of-the-art pathfinding approaches aim at telling a story that coincides with the user's expectations by investigating paths over Linked Data on the Web. By taking into account serendipity in storytelling, we aim at improving and tailoring existing approaches towards better fitting user expectations so that users are able to discover interesting knowledge without feeling unsure or even lost in the story facts. To this end, we propose to optimize the link estimation between - and the selection of facts in a story by increasing the consistency and relevancy of links between facts through additional domain delineation and refinement steps. In order to address multiple aspects of serendipity, we propose and investigate combinations of weights and heuristics in paths forming the essential building blocks for each story. Our experimental findings with stories based on DBpedia indicate the improvements when applying the optimized algorithm

    Consolidation with ethyl silicate: how the amount of product alters the physical properties of the bricks and affects their durability

    We evaluated the consolidating capacity of ethyl silicate in three types of bricks fired at 800, 950 and 1100 °C. We chose two concentrations of product, at 25% and 50%, diluting the product in white spirit to estimate whether greater dilution enables the product to penetrate deeper into the bricks, or whether a higher concentration leads to better consolidation of bricks. The application of ethyl silicate caused bricks porosity to decline and their compactness to increase. These changes were more accentuated as the concentration of the product increased. The pore size distribution not changed substantially except that there were fewer of the smallest pores. The color and the lightness of the pieces changed after application of the consolidant, albeit slightly. The durability of bricks improved as manifested by the results of the salt crystallization test. In general, the longest-lasting pieces were those treated with 25% ethyl silicate.Se ha evaluado la capacidad consolidante del silicato de etilo en tres tipos de ladrillos cocidos a 800, 950 y 1100 °C. Se eligieron dos concentraciones de producto, al 25% y 50%, diluyÊndolo en white spirit para estimar si mås dilución favorece una penetración mås en profundidad del producto o si una mayor concentración produce una mejor consolidación de los ladrillos. El silicato de etilo ha causado una disminución de la porosidad y un aumento de la compacidad de los ladrillos, acentuåndose estas modificaciones con mayor concentración de producto. La distribución poromÊtrica no ha cambiado de forma sustancial, disminuyendo los poros mås pequeùos. Color y luminosidad de las piezas han modificado ligeramente tras la aplicación del consolidante. Los ladrillos consolidados han mejorado su durabilidad frente al envejecimiento acelerado producido por las sales.     Autism spectrum disorder and anorexia nervosa: an Italian prospective study

    Background: Potential overlaps exist between psychopathological features of Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The impact of malnutrition on autistic traits in patients with AN should be considered. This study investigates possible associations among the psychopathology of Eating Disorders (EDs), ASD traits and BMI in a group of young patients with AN, using the EDI-3 (Eating Disorder Inventory-3) test and gold-standard measures for ASD. Methods: Prospective study involving 23 inpatients admitted to an Italian Centre for paediatric ED. ASD traits and ED psychopathology were assessed administering the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2), AQ (Autism Quotient) and EDI-3 tests. Both present and past autistic traits were investigated using different versions of AQ. Correlations were adjusted for BMI, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) comorbidity and concurrent antipsychotic treatments. Results: An ASD diagnosis was possible in 22% of patients. Significant correlations were documented between ASD traits and ED psychopathology: AQ total-Interpersonal problems (IPC) (p = 0.041); AQ total-Global psychological maladjustment (GMPC) (p = 0.027); AQ social skills-Ineffectiveness (IC) (p = 0.018); AQ social skills-IPC (p = 0.019); AQ social skills-Affective problems (APC) (p = 0.025); AQ social skills-GMPC (p = 0.007); AQ attention switching-IPC (p = 0.020); ADOS-2 imagination-IC (p = 0.035). These correlations were independent of BMI, OCD and antipsychotic treatments. Conclusions: ASD traits presented high prevalence in a group of young inpatients with AN. These traits were significantly correlated to 4 specific EDI-3 subscales and independent of BMI.     Submental Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia Following Cryolipolysis: A Report and Management Recommendations

    Cryolipolysis (CoolSculptingÂŽ) is a Food and Drug Administration-cleared noninvasive fat-reduction technique that has gained popularity in recent years given its reduced cost, risk of adverse effects, and recovery time relative to traditional invasive methods, such as liposuction. Despite this low incidence of adverse effects, there have been increasing reports of a rare aesthetically displeasing phenomenon termed paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH). PAH presents several months after cryolipolysis as a painless and well-demarcated enlargement of the tissue limited to the treatment area.1 With a reported incidence ranging from 0.005% to 2%, all known cases of PAH have been localized to the treatment areas of the abdomen, back, flank, thighs, and chest with just one other reported case of the submental area.2 To our knowledge, we present the first reported case of submental PAH after cryolipolysis in North America and its subsequent management

    Forward Neutral Pion Transverse Single Spin Asymmetries in p+p Collisions at \sqrt{s}=200 GeV

    We report precision measurements of the Feynman-x dependence, and first measurements of the transverse momentum dependence, of transverse single spin asymmetries for the production of \pi^0 mesons from polarized proton collisions at \sqrt{s}=200 GeV. The x_F dependence of the results is in fair agreement with perturbative QCD model calculations that identify orbital motion of quarks and gluons within the proton as the origin of the spin effects. Results for the p_T dependence at fixed x_F are not consistent with pQCD-based calculations.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Growth of Long Range Forward-Backward Multiplicity Correlations with Centrality in Au+Au Collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV

    Forward-backward multiplicity correlation strengths have been measured with the STAR detector for Au+Au and p+p\textit{p+p} collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV. Strong short and long range correlations (LRC) are seen in central Au+Au collisions. The magnitude of these correlations decrease with decreasing centrality until only short range correlations are observed in peripheral Au+Au collisions. Both the Dual Parton Model (DPM) and the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) predict the existence of the long range correlations. In the DPM the fluctuation in the number of elementary (parton) inelastic collisions produces the LRC. In the CGC longitudinal color flux tubes generate the LRC. The data is in qualitative agreement with the predictions from the DPM and indicates the presence of multiple parton interactions.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures The abstract has been slightly modifie

    K/pi Fluctuations at Relativistic Energies

    We report results for K/πK/\pi fluctuations from Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 19.6, 62.4, 130, and 200 GeV using the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Our results for K/πK/\pi fluctuations in central collisions show little dependence on the incident energies studied and are on the same order as results observed by NA49 at the Super Proton Synchrotron in central Pb+Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 12.3 and 17.3 GeV. We also report results for the collision centrality dependence of K/πK/\pi fluctuations as well as results for K+/π+K^{+}/\pi^{+}, K−/π−K^{-}/\pi^{-}, K+/π−K^{+}/\pi^{-}, and K−/π+K^{-}/\pi^{+} fluctuations. We observe that the K/πK/\pi fluctuations scale with the multiplicity density, dN/dηdN/d\eta, rather than the number of participating nucleons.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Measurement of the t t-bar production cross section in the dilepton channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    The t t-bar production cross section (sigma[t t-bar]) is measured in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV in data collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 inverse femtobarns. The measurement is performed in events with two leptons (electrons or muons) in the final state, at least two jets identified as jets originating from b quarks, and the presence of an imbalance in transverse momentum. The measured value of sigma[t t-bar] for a top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV is 161.9 +/- 2.5 (stat.) +5.1/-5.0 (syst.) +/- 3.6(lumi.) pb, consistent with the prediction of the standard model.Comment: Replaced with published version.     Combined search for the quarks of a sequential fourth generation

    Results are presented from a search for a fourth generation of quarks produced singly or in pairs in a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 inverse femtobarns recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2011. A novel strategy has been developed for a combined search for quarks of the up and down type in decay channels with at least one isolated muon or electron. Limits on the mass of the fourth-generation quarks and the relevant Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements are derived in the context of a simple extension of the standard model with a sequential fourth generation of fermions. The existence of mass-degenerate fourth-generation quarks with masses below 685 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level for minimal off-diagonal mixing between the third- and the fourth-generation quarks. With a mass difference of 25 GeV between the quark masses, the obtained limit on the masses of the fourth-generation quarks shifts by about +/- 20 GeV.
